A Proven Process for Custom Automation Delivery

We work with you to fully understand requirements before design begins, helping reduce late-stage changes and improving project success.

  • Fact Finding / Q&A: Define the customerโ€™s needs and requirements, including machine type, specific needs, loading, and cycle requirements.
  • Analyze: Translate application needs into a clear scope of design before the solution is developed.
  • Develop a Solution: Engineer a WEISS solution utilizing WEISS products and engineering expertise to simplify work for design engineering, purchasing, assembly, and test.
  • Build the Solution: Execute electro-mechanical construction from fabrication and machining to programming and validation, concluding with any FAT requirements.
  • Delivery & Implementation: Package within robust, custom-designed skids and crates; support on-site installation, training, and maintenance requirements.

Production Capacity Backed by Quality Procedures

Our production facility includes more than 30,000 sq. ft. of production space with a complete machine shop and assembly area. We have the capability to machine up to a 90-inch diameter dial or tooling plate and can manufacture dials and plates even larger. Complete measurement data for dials and tooling plates is also available for use when mounting your tooling.

Our multiple large bridge mills offer X-Axis Travel of 120.5″ (3060 mm) and Y-Axis Travel of 84.6″ (2150 mm), accommodating the most demanding design requirements with Linear Position Accuracy of +/- 0.0006″ (0.015 mm) throughout full travel and Linear Repeatability of +/- 0.0001″ (0.003 mm).

Custom Solution Examples

Collaborative Design for a High-Station, Space-Constrained System

WEISS developed a collaborative solution to meet a requirement of more than 20 stations with the ability to lift all stations 3 to 5 inches during each index, while accommodating large 8-inch by 30-inch modules and staying within a 10-foot by 10-foot footprint. WEISS delivered a custom index and lift system and provided value-added items including base framing, plating services, and project management of WEISS-supplied components.

โ€œWEISS was the only vendor willing to help develop a collaborative solution to accommodate our project.โ€

Turnkey Open-Center Indexing Ring for Large Loads

Alpha Integration turned to WEISS for a reliable, turnkey solution for an automotive parts assembly machine, requiring a large open-center indexing ring capable of handling large loads. WEISS provided a one-source solution, including the indexer and supporting weldments, from concept through design.

โ€œThe service was great from concept to actual design of the indexer and supporting weldments.โ€

Custom Automation Solutions FAQs

Custom automation projects often raise detailed technical and implementation questions early in the evaluation process. The following FAQs address common topics related to WEISS Custom Automation Solutions, including scope, engineering support, validation, and project execution. This information is intended to help engineers, integrators, and decision-makers understand how WEISS supports custom motion applications from initial requirements through delivery and acceptance.

What does WEISS mean by โ€œCustom Automation Solutionsโ€?

WEISS Custom Automation Solutions extend beyond standard rotary and linear products to include engineered mechanical assemblies, tooling plates, controls, and complete motion subsystems tailored to a specific application or machine requirement.

How custom can a WEISS solution be?

Solutions range from modified standard products with custom plates or mounting structures to fully engineered assemblies that include bases, weldments, motion control panels, and application-specific integration.

Does WEISS provide both mechanical and controls support?

Yes. WEISS provides mechanical design and build services as well as custom motion control panels and controls support specifically matched to WEISS rotary and linear platforms.

What industries typically use WEISS custom automation solutions?

WEISS custom solutions are commonly used in automotive, aerospace and defense, medical device manufacturing, electronics, battery production, additive manufacturing, and other precision assembly environments.

What is the typical process for developing a custom solution with WEISS?

Projects follow a defined process that includes requirements gathering, application analysis, solution development, build and assembly, factory acceptance testing (FAT), and delivery with optional on-site support.

Can WEISS perform Factory Acceptance Testing (FAT)?

Yes. WEISS supports Factory Acceptance Testing to verify mechanical function, positioning accuracy, repeatability, and system performance prior to shipment.

What size or load limitations apply to custom dial plates or tooling plates?

WEISS can machine large dial and tooling plates, including diameters up to approximately 90 inches, with the ability to support even larger solutions depending on application requirements.

Are measurement and inspection data available for custom plates?

Yes. Dial plates and tooling plates are checked against print dimensional data, and optional CMM measurement reports are available for precision or critical dimensions.

How does using a WEISS custom solution reduce project risk?

By sourcing the rotary or linear platform, mechanical integration, and controls from a single supplier, customers reduce interface risk, simplify project management, and shorten commissioning timelines.

How do I get started with a WEISS custom automation project?

The process begins with a FREE application review. Customers provide basic requirements such as load, cycle time, accuracy, footprint, and operating environment, and WEISS engineers collaborate to define and develop the solution.
